How do I access Kopete
 

Im new to using Linux,& my system is the Suse Linux.I want to use my instant messaging that is in Kopete,but I cant figure out how to get into it & set it up.
Is there anyone that can give me very simple step by step instructions on how to do this.Please make the steps as easy as you can,as I have no training at all on a computer.

First, just a little note. It is best to keep the conversations on the forums and out of email. There are 2 reasons for that. 1) Posting your email address online can help attract SPAM. 2) Other people in the future that have the same problem as you can read this in the archives. :) Anyways, enough nagging :p

First, you are not limited to Kopete. I personally can't stand it (please, personal preference, no flame wars). I found it unintuitive and lacking features. Of course I haven't used KDE since 3.1 or 3.2 (can't remember which) so this may have changed.

Anyways, first you should choose an IM program. These are the main ones :

aMSN : This is by far the best IM client on Linux with regards to MSN specific features. If the only protocol you use for IM is MSN, then definately go with aMSN. It is very similar to MSN Messenger for Windows.

Gaim : This is my favourite. Even though it is a Gnome application, it still fits in well with KDE (at least I think so). Some KDE specific distros (like Knoppix) even include it as the default. It has support for all the mainstream protocols (AOL/AIM, ICQ, MSN, Novell Groupwise, etc.) and it is very intuitive. It has neat features like tabbed chatting and I find if you use Gnome (am I correct in assuming you are using KDE) it blends in awesome with the DE. Also, you can have numerous accounts on one protocol running in the same main window (for instance, 5 AIM accounts, 3 MSN Messenger, 2 ICQ, etc.)

Kopete : I don't like it, but I also haven't used it in forever so it may have changed, so I won't comment on it further. Someone else may want to comment on this one for me. It does blend in the best with KDE though (since it is a KDE application).

Anyways, I would personally recomment Gaim for a newbie, or aMSN if you are using only MSN.

If you decide to stick with Kopete, someone else will have to help you setting it up. If you decide to go with one of the others, post back and I'll tell you how to get them running.
