"Anyone know how SuSE 8.2 started his KDM?"

KDM is started when you use run level 5.

"l5:5:wait:/etc/init.d/rc 5"

Run level 5 means to start a script named /etc/init.d/rc and pass it a parameter of 5. The rc script then runs every script in the /etc/init.d/rc5.d directory. The last script in the /etc/init.d/rc5.d directory in SuSE 9.1 is called S15xdm. I don't know what it is called in SuSE 8.2 but it will be the last file in /etc/init.d/rc5.d directory.

S15xdm determines that you set KDM as your default login and starts KDM.
