How can you debug a system hang during shutdown?

My Feodora 11 AMD 64 system has begun hanging when I shutdown. It drops the window manager and goes to a blank screen. Sometimes there is a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner, but mostly it is a dark grey screen and then sits.

I have gone through syslog/messages to see if I can decipher anything, with no luck (don't really know precisely what to look for).

How do you debug something like this?

The system is fairly clean. I am running samba and mdadm (for a raid 5 disk configuration), but nothing else other than desktop type apps. I do have the NVIDIA driver installed and the various codecs for video/audio playback.

Any ideas will be appreciated.

Hi,

What about your 'Xorg' log?

Thanks for the reply. Xorg.log doesn't give any clues. That log appears to be rewritten on boot since the only content is from startup. I was hoping for a log similar to boot.log, but for shutdowns to be able to see which line fails or hangs, but that doesn't seem to exist.

What you could do is log in as root at the console then use /sbin/shutdown and see if anything scrolls past. If that fails try again but 'telinit 1' first, then shutdown. If no seemingly useful information is shown you could try and pinpoint the moment when this behaviour started. Knowing the approximate time could help in listing logs around that time, kernel and configuration changes and installed or removed software.

Thanks for your suggestions... looks like whatever was causing the hang has disappeared. The problem is not completely gone. If I shutdown now, I get the grey screen without text, but the system ultimately does shutdown. Must be something related to the NVIDIA driver or X during shutdown.

Try editing /boot/grub/menu.lst
Remove the quiet and splash options from your kernel boot line.
Then, maybe, you'll find out where it hangs.

As sometimes happens with me, I managed to screw up plenty of other things and decided to rebuild the box... Problem Solved! Thanks for all the suggestions.
