Why not format the hard drive?

i have data in my hard drive, so i cannot just format the whole of it. Please tell if there is any other option.

Ok...then why not delete the Fedora partition only?

Or if your data is in the Fedora partition, copy it somewhere else first.

It's imossible to "uninstall an OS". You just overwrite it with a new one.

Assuming that you can boot to the CD, choose "Try Ubuntu without making any changes to your system" at the boot menu. Once you're in the live environment, it's in the Administration menu as "Partition Editor".

It depends on the OS you will be deleting the partition from.

In Linux you can use fdisk, or a graphical utility like gparted.

In Windows you would use the Disk Management section of the Computer Management program in the control panel.

OK ! I am deleting the partition from Fedora core 6 os, which is a
linux distro. Now as far as fdisk is concerned here is the output of this command - bash: fdisk: command not found
And for gparted , if anyone can tell me how to use gparted , using fedora core 6 os.

while you are installing your ubuntu, gparted comes to run while partitioning.
It does not depends whether system has OS or not.

You don't need to reformat the disk in the old OS. The new OS's installer will do it for you, or if not, will have built-in utilities to let you do it.

OK! i have windows set up , which goes to a blank screen just after booting from the CD! so i can't do this.
And the bottom line is that i want to uninstall fedora core 6 only to install windows xp, which i'm not able to do why i just wrote. And i think the only reason why win xp would hang is due to fedora core 6 on the harddisk. So i want to get rid of this fedora core 6 which is coming in my way of installing windows xp. For this i've to delete fedora core 6 somehow(for which i cannot use xp installer cd, naturally)
Now can u please help with this!

I've tried this but of no gain. As after reaching there it also goes ahead with installation of ubuntu which i don't want. All i want is to make use of gparted using ubuntu live cd, for my help (for creating partitions for win etc.)

Try opening a terminal and running "sudo /usr/sbin/gparted".
