How can I test my scanner?

I have Mandrake 8.1 standard edition and an Epson GT 7000 USB Scanner.

After running HardDrake I clicked on "scanner" but there was no apparent recognition of the device. (it was switched on!) The USB interface is recognised and reports using kernel module usb : ohci.

Is there any way that I can definitely establish whether or not the scanner is recognised by Mandrake? If I can get the hardware recognised what else do I need to do to get it working properly?

Thanks, Alan

me too

I would also like to know what Alan is asking. Except, I have a Canon USB scanner.
Seems mandrake has it as an unrecognized device...

I have read in the Docs section that there may be problems with Canon scanners. So maybe if I go all linux, I may need to get another brand - like epson...?

Thanks

you might wanna give usbview a go, it can give a tree display of all recognised devices on the usb bus.

Where can I find usbview ?

I had another look in HardDrake and the only thing I could find was "USB Interfaces". This did not contain a list of any USB devices and only shows the M/B chipset and mentions the kernel module (usb : ohci).

I do have a USB Gamepad and this is listed under "Joystick" in HardDrake. Clicking on "+" item tells me that I have a Microsoft SideWinder Gamepad Pro connected to a USB bus - which is correct. So there does not appear to be a hardware problem which might be stopping Mandrake from identifyting the presence of USB on my system. It just won't recognise the scanner!

Is there a way to configure the scanner manually through opening up a terminal window as a Superuser? (I ended up having to do this with my ISA soundcard which initially was not recognised by Mandrake but now works)

Thanks, Alan

Update on the last post...

I clicked on "Control Center" in KDE and then clicked on "Information" and finally on "USB Devices". There was my scanner listed as a USB device!

(Also works via Configuration/KDE/Information/USB Devices)

Wierd that KDE is detecting the scanner but HardDrake can't seem to find it.

I did read somewhere else that you need a "SANE" driver to make a scanner work in Linux. Is this correct and if so where can I find such a driver for my scanner?

Thanks again, Alan
