You haven't indicated that you have a Linux system on your computer, do you? If so, which one? Are these files on a windows or Linux filesystem? Are they on a drive on your computer or on another network computer? Answers to these questions would be a good start.

I use both windows 7/8 and not linux. I tried to bootup with Ubuntu but can see the drive showing up after plugging it through eSATA port. All file were save from windows to the drive. Here is a link to the drive. http://www.seagate.com/external-hard...agate-central/

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

It is a NAS device that uses a linux file system with a block size > 4K. A search shows the drive can be accessed via the fuse-ext2. Since you have no linux experience this could be a bit of a challenge for you.

Like you said I have no experience of Linux but with the necessary steps and instruction on what to do I can get it done. Thanks I will try the fuse-ext2 and also look up that like.

You could try Photorec.

Be sure to read the instructions and the section on "How Photorec Works" so you have a good idea of what you are getting into. If it can recover the files, it will not recover the file names. Be aware that the drive may be so far gone that no files can be recovered.

I once worked with a tech who paid several hundred dollars (it was expensed) in attempt to have a professional data recovery company rescue files from the hard drive (they were for an access control security database). Things that looked like files were recovered, but they damaged beyond repair and could not be reused.
