Question how can i get my usb to work?

i'm very new to linux and need help.
I loaded slackware 9.0 without a problem only to find it won't recognize my usb ports. I have an Abit KD7 board with onboard sound (Ac 97) that it won't recognize and it doesn't support my Geoforce MX 420 64 meg sdram videocard either. any help wiyh any of these issues would be greatly appreciated.

thank you

All of these things are supported in the kernel. You can either read up on kernel configuration, possibly the Rute Guide (In FancyPiper's Signature) would be of some help; or you can choose a different distro that will assist you in configuring these devices for you from the get go. Slack has a bit of a more steep (sp?) learning curve than distros like Mandrake and SuSE. You can stick with slack, but simply be prepared to learn, a lot, and quickly.

Your Nvidia card needs the drivers from www.nvidia.com

All this support is in the kernel or seperate drivers. Not within your distro. However some distros include support for these for you.

Welcome to LQ

Cool

thanks master c
i've been to nvidia and downloaded the drivers but they don't list support for slack so i'm hesitant about trying them. I've also been to the realtek site to get the linux driver update for the sound but the links continually time out. If i load the drivers for these devices do I need to recompile the kernel?

It depends on the driver. For nvidia, no. I run Slack and have no problems with the Nvidia driver. Just make sure you follow the Readme correctly.

As for your soundcard, you might look into www.alsa-project.org since I haven't heard great things about the RealTek driver.

Cool
