how can I get Linux to see my USB printer

I am a from the dark side (Macintosh G4 running YellowDog Linux 3.0.1)

My printer is an Epson C43UX.

YellowDog doesn't manage to communicate with it, and the latest model in the printers list is the C42UX. I tried selecting that but still nothing happens when I try test printing.

Any clues for someone who is so new he will need idiot-proof instructions!

Cheers

Make sure the printer is switched on before the CUPS daemon is started. Try switching the printer on, and restartin CUPS.

Unfortunately, CUPS doesn't see USB printers unless they are switched on when it is started.

Not sure if I can help, but if you type
First "ps -aux | grep cups" (without quotes) to see if the cups daemon is actually running
should output something like

root 1674 0.0 0.7 5020 1688 ? S 12:06 0:01 cupsd

If so then try:
tail -f /var/log/messages

and the switch the printer on and off a few times (wait a few seconds between) then something should show up on the screen at least showing if the printer is being seen. Do you have any other USB devices that work?

I will try it as soon as I have time. Yes, my mouse and keyboard are USB.
