hi,
CTRL-ALT-BkSp will reset the x server and dump you back at your login prompt or screen. you say - Quote:
this suggests that you've logged in as root... *don't do this*!!! unless you're absolutely certain you know what you're doing!! you should only go root when absolutely necessary and / or prompted by your system. anyway, regarding your question, for the purposes of installing the nvidia drivers.. back at the login screen, you should see an option to log in as 'failsafe' or similar - select this option and you should log in to a console, from where you can install your drivers. there may be some post-install issues to deal with depending on your distro - read the docs. i found the nvidia driver installation relatively straightforward (certainly compared to ati, which can be a nightmare). have fun! |

Getting in X-Server
Hello everyone!
I want to ask a different question -- how do I get into X-Server? I screwed up my linux once and on the re-install I chose not to logon to the X-Server by default, hoping I can get access to the console, so I can install my nVidia drivers. I have not installed them yet, but I would like to know how to get back to the x-server, so I can use the GUI. Thanks! :Pengy: |
at your command prompt, logged in as a normal user, try 'startx' and let us know what happens..

Thanks!
My problem was that I couldn't even log-on in the command prompt. The reason was that I thought I was not typing any password and I thought that something is wrong and I could only logon as root, since I did not place a password for it.
Luckily, I found out how to login without the login screen, so now everything is fine. Thank you for replying. |
stopping X
init 3 kills x
init 5 starts it |
Hi, I'm using RedHat 9, I get the same X server problem when trying to install NVidia drivers. I have tried the Failsafe, but i still get the same as it does not goto the command line. How do i get out of it so then im in complete command line?
And does anyone know any links to improving FPS on linux for Unreal Tournament. and Also where i can find out how to get my UT2004 to work on Red Hat 9 too? i cant remember what the exact error for ut2004 is but im sure i can find it. the nvidia update might fix my problem i dont know yet, Thanks Hardw1re. |
