What distro are you running?????? And what version!?

Assuming a default install of a modern Debian-based distro, in your Programs menu somewhere should be a "Synaptic" or "Add/Remove Programs". Use it to search for and install programs. You should not have to edit sources.list unless you want to do something special, or the defaults you got are wrong.

example: I want to download this package http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/xfce4-terminal
what do I add to /etc/apt/sources.list to make apt-get download and install the package & all the deps automatically?

What happens when you just run "apt-get install xfce4-terminal" ???

if it doesn't work, you need to post the output you got and your current sources.list.

/etc/apt/sources.list (the default links which were commented out during install due to no available internet connection to verify them at that time which I uncommented)

Code:
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.0 _Squeeze_ - Official i386 DVD Binary-1 2011$

deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib
deb ://volatile.debian.org squeeze-updates main contrib
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze non-free contrib main
deb-src ://volatile.debian.org squeeze-updates main contrib
deb ftp://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/dists/ lenny squeeze
'apt-get update' output:

Code:

try comment two volatile lines in you sources list to this:
Code:
#deb ://volatile.debian.org squeeze-updates main contrib
#deb-src ://volatile.debian.org squeeze-updates main contrib
then do apt-get update

So you're running Debian Squeeze! Several of those lines are incorrectly formatted. And volatile does not exist in Squeeze.

Code:
deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main contrib
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ squeeze non-free contrib main
Then try apt-get update again.
