How can I create a virtual machine from a system already in production?

I have a system currently in production that has been upgraded with various patches and changes. It is hard to install the system using the ISOs since my server has evolved. Is there some way to take an image of the evolved server and create a virtual appliance or virtual machine?

This would be great so I would have to go back and remember the hundreds of changes I made on the server since it was born.

I'd like to do this with vmware server which is installed on Linux.

Talking There is a solution

Try using Ghost to make an image. Then you can take that image and run it anywhere you want, even in VM. VM server is free but Ghost is not. If money is an issue then you can always use DD to make a bit by bit backup to another hard drive .

I have an old boot floppy for Ghost. This is how I see things going:

Insert floppy in my linux vmware server. Set virtual machine to boot to floppy in BIOS.
In ghost, choose image to restore. However, where do you put this image? Doesn't ghost only have access to the vm disk?
