How can I create a software from the source?

Hi everyone. I think this is a very basic question. But I am new to linux. My question is after I get the source file of a program, then what is the procedure to compile this file so that I have a working software? I use Mandrake Linux 9.1. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanking you in advance.

P.S.: If someone has already asked this question then please provide a pointer to the answer.

Well, after unpacking the file you usually find compiling instructions from the README and INSTALL files provided with the sources. But basically it goes as following: (Well, I assume that U have all requiered programs installed..)

1: configure
2: make
3: make install

But as said, you MUST have all programs installed for software developing!!
else you *Will* get some serious errors.

Good luck, and remember: Linux == Read, Read, Read, and learn... =)

Normally you read the README file with the source, and typically for Mandrake follow the commands (as root) of:

./configure --prefix=/usr
make
make install

However, what are you trying to compile, because Mandrake is a package based distro and you should be able to get a precompiled version in a .rpm from the CDs or online.
