How can I clean my desktop in Gnome?

I don't like to have icons on my desktop. How can I clean it completely, without making icons appear when I restart my computer?

Thanks.

Probably better to try the obvious i.e. make sure that theres menu entries for the icons - if so just delete/move to wastebin (and empty it) - or if theres no menu entry, then edit it and then delete the icons ?????

Sorry, I'm guessing here, as I don't like gnome and from memory, I should think that under kde it should be possible to just have the icons on one virtual desktop and use a different one as default.

regards

John

I think you can do that with gtweakui. A little more complicated but equally effective gconf-editor

If it's not thread hijacking -- John:
  1. Are you saying that I could have different icons on each desktop, esp. have only 1 that is cluttered w/ all the available device icons?
  2. Have you ever done this?
  3. Which ver. of KDE?
  4. How?
I use "Configure Desktop" (in KDE 3.3.2) & I have never seen anything like an "Apply this choice to the current desktop only" option.
