What kind of device are you trying to mount? Is it a filesystem?

You may need to add yourself to an appropriate group with write permissions to the device, if for example, we're talking about a CD/DVD drive or a floppy.

i.e., wheel, floppy, dialout, audio, video, cdrom, plugdev, scanner, power, and netdev, are all common groups to which a non-priv'd user might need to belong to in order to perform some actions or use certain devices.

I hope that helps!

Kindest regards,

.

If he's not root, that could be tricky ...

You'll either need to get root eg via sudo, or ask the local admin (I recommend the latter anyway)
