How can I capture mpeg2 from 1394 port in ubuntu

Hi, newbie here.

I am trying to setup Ubuntu 6.06 on my laptop with dv1394 port. Everything is so far so good except media capturing.

I don't have much disk space to capture Raw DV or AVI format. I was using WinDVD creator in XP that can capture mpeg2 directly. Just wonder is there any software in Linux can really do that? Or any batch flow that can help me to accomplish my goal?

thx

With command line utilities:

"dvgrab" command starts your 1394 connected camera ( run as root !) and captures video until you power off the camera or press CTRL+C

It leaves you a big raw .avi file

Then compress with "mencoder":

mencoder -ovc lavc -oac lavc capturedFile.avi -o outputFile.avi

Without audio:

mencoder -ovc lavc -nosound capturedFile.avi -o outputFile.avi

To DivX:

mencoder -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:mbd=2:trell -oac lavc Origin.avi -o outputDivxFile.avi

Hope it helps.

So, is it possible to pipeline the process? I mean I really don't have much space to save the Raw AVI, and converting is kinda time consuming. How to convert it into mpeg?

Much thanks
