How can boot reinstall ubunto without losing all my database?
 

Hi every one!
I'm new on linux, and I am using ubuntu.:confused:
Yesterday, when I start my pc, came up a message in red fsck fail, then I taped 'yes' and the letter 'y' appered on the screem. I swiched off on the power bottom and starded again, but ubuntu did't came up anymore. So, I restarted the pc and pressed F8, (I'm planning to reinstall ubuntu 5.04 for AMD), "BUT I DON'T WANT TO LOSE MY DATABASE", then I have 3 opisions. "1st FLOPPY DRIVE", "PM-Maxtor 6Y080L0" and "SM-VOM-12E48X". Which one shaw I go and don't lose database? And what are the next possible steps I will need to follow?

First off, I understand your concern over loosing your data base.

There are several things you can do, before you try any re-installing. I would recommend you get a live linux CD like Knoppix, and boot it from CD. With Knoppix there are tutorials to help you rescue your system, without re-installing.

Knoppix is a complete distro. It is capable of copying your data to another partition, resizing and formatting etc. It has k3b in it, and with that you could burn a CD or DVD depending on the hardware you have. So, the first thing is, get and burn a live distro, there are lots of choices, Knoppix is the one I have used. Second learn enough about it to back up your data.

Next spend some time and learn the csck command. This is used to repair your file system. See man csck for help.

If it is reparable, you won't have to re-install; and my guess by your post is you have several problems. Looks like you powered down with the file system mounted, and that is something that is very dangerous.

If it is not re-parable, and it may not be, if you have drive problems, you will need to buy a new drive. Good thing big drives are now cheap. In this case, you could install a new drive, boot Knoppix, and just copy the data base from the old drive to the new drive.
