Holy SMOKES BATMAN! Sound in Slackware 12 doesnt work

Greetings all Magnificent Slackware Genius' (that includes you Joel),

So do I have to add my user (which is mostly root, until i get the hang of things) to the audio folder?

Any advice would help me undertstand this a little more...and do i just google Slackbook? or is there a specific link to a certain site?

Add your regular user name (not root) as a member of the audio group. Don't run as root unless you need to perform administrative functions. Especially if you don't have a hang on things.

Hi bo_akins, You need to add your user to the audio, plugdev, and cdrom groups. I'd also recommend doing that sooner rather than later for a number of reasons. The first being system security and safety, the second to facilitate things working. If you have something working as root then switch to user and it doesn't, you're back at square one. Better to get things working once IMHO. If you're having sound problems running as root it's not likely a permissions problem. You may want to ask a few more questions or give some specifics. That said, hope this clears up your initial question.
Good luck. ;-)

You'll probably need to run "alsaconf" (as root) followed by "alsamixer" (as an ordinary user) and then "alsactl store" (as root) to get sound working.

This has been asked in the Slackware forum here many time before.
