Ho do I Install USB NIC on Ubantu 9.1
I'm a total newbie to linux and my laptop can only use a USB NIC card. the right driver is rt73.inf and I have it instaaled in the root directory but somehow cant' get linux to recognize it. I found an old guide on the internet for installation that said to use ndiswrapper but I'm nowhere on the installation and setup. What do I do??

Is this a wired or wireless network device? The file you mention is a Windows driver, which is of no use on Linux unless you are trying to use ndiswrapper.
What documentation are you trying to follow for the installation? What happens when you just plug the device in? |
The device is a Linksys Wireless-G USB NIC, model WUSB 54GC. I realize the driver is a Windows driver but as far as I know that's all that's available for this device.I found a guide written by a Russian programmer a couple years ago for installing the NIC on Ubunto 7.1 but it appears not to work on 9.1. The guide I've been trying says the following:
install ndiswrapper: apt-get install ndiswrapper ----I did that and it's installed in my root directory on Linux. Then it says to cd to ~ and install the drivers for the NIC card: ndiswraspper -i rt73.inf,ndiswrapper -m, ndiswrapper -mi and ndiswrapper -ma That doesn't work. The Windows drivers are rt73.cat, rt73.inf and rt73.sys The USB device doesn't install by itself when plugged into the USB port- it just sits there. I appreciate your posting and hope you can help. Right now I'm using an ethernet wired connection but I want to get back to wireless as I had on Windows. |
Take a look at this:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...er/Ndiswrapper It should walk you through getting ndiswrapper configured. You should do an Internet search for your specfic NIC model number, version number and "Linux". Some of these NICs also require a firmware upgrade/mod. Also keep in mind that the version number of the NIC is critical since different versions of the same model can sometimes have completely different chipsets inside. You'll want to make sure that ndiswrapper is your only option - it's really a last resort. Also, if using it, make sure you have the latest Windows driver for that NIC. Good luck. |
