A DNS server responds with an IP address (like 66.120.75.50) when given a domain name (like linuxquestions.org). This is useful for a web browser, but not very useful for you, as you seem to be able to connect to the Internet already (judging by the fact that you are posting in this forum).

yeah i know how it works

but i guess my question is

how is it useful for a small network allready connected to the Internet

citrus 05-30-2004 04:43 AM

so far this is what i get outta it

if i set up a dns server on my server lets say my server is server.com
then my dns server could route one of my machines called blah to blah.server.com????

but as far as obtaining server.com for my main server i have to go thru some other type of server/website to buy it??? or what...

It won't do much. It reduce your page load times, but I doubt it would be noticeable on a network without much traffic. Maybe if you had a really slow modem, it would be faster for your common sites.

On the other hand, it could be fun to set up and tweak.
