hmm.. I can't send emails

I have exim4 installed and running. Also have mailx installed and running.

So I tried to send mail by the following command:

mail -s testing me@yahoo.com
hiya
.

I waited... no email. Checked log, and saw the following.
2008-06-19 14:00:45 1K9ORB-0001Ts-U0 <= root@mydomain.com U=root P=local S=348
2008-06-19 14:01:41 1K9ORB-0001Ts-U0 == me@yahoo.com R=dnslookup defer (-1): host lookup did not complete

So I tried a different email address:

mail -s testing me@gmail.com
hiiya
.

2008-06-19 14:07:33 1K9OXl-0001U0-Vg <= root@mydomain.com U=root P=local S=352
2008-06-19 14:07:34 1K9OXl-0001U0-Vg gmail.com [64.195.235.119] Connection refused
2008-06-19 14:07:34 1K9OXl-0001U0-Vg == me@gmail.com R=dnslookup T=remote_smtp defer (111): Connection refused

anyone know What's wrong? Thanks a bunch.

strange. I tweaked around my resolv.conf file and tried to send mail again. this time it returned even more junk.

Do you have a domain name registered ?
Do you have an A record setup (host record) for your mail server ?
Do you have a MX record setup for your mail server ?
is Reverse DNS setup for your mail server ? (rDNS needs to be configured by your provider)

Without valid A, MX, and rDNS records for your mail server, my mail server would reject mail from you as well. because without those entries it surely can be nothing other than SPAM..

Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.. will all reject mail without those DNS records setup..

Are you an ISP or other mail server administrator having issues sending to Yahoo!

Maintain accurate reverse-DNS information for your mail servers. Yahoo! Mail makes extensive DNS checks for each connection, and an accurate reverse DNS will ensure prompt processing of your connection and email.
