hidden files

What is the whole idea of a hidden file (./filename)?
Is it read-only by default?

TIA

No - it's just to get it out of your way - not clutter up ls output. Though I wish they'd just create a ~/etc for personal configs.

-- Just noticed *exactly* what you typed, though - that's a command line to execute 'filename' in the current directory - a hidden file is just a file whose name begins with a dot. Just to clarify.
