In Ubuntu, I leave root as the admin and use Sudo SU to promote my user to super user. This is a safer method than making your user admin.

In ubuntu the root account is disabled by default & sudo is used by the main user. You can either use "sudo su" or "sudo <command>.

Enter in a terminal su then type your password, do what you need to do, then type exit, to go back to your user.
