Hi, I need help with 3 problems on my Linux system Asus netbook

I have a small Asus netbook that runs on Linux.
Our main computer is a vista run PC.
Both are connected to the internet through external netgear/modem. Not wireless.
When I first got it, all was well but then after a few months I stopped being able to
1/ Sign into MSN
2/ Chat to my friends on Facebook, although I can read and post
3/ I can access my hotmail although I have no visible space to write...(can not see what I am writing and can not check). Once I have sent the email and look in sent, I can view. This is no good as I can not correct what I am writing.
I have just been told about your forum and I would very much appreciate help in getting these 3 problems sorted so i can enjoy once again.
Thankyou in advance.

Screen shots might help here. What browser and what version are you using? Which distribution of Linux?

Hi GC and welcome to LQ!
It's always a good idea to ask one question at a time. It's also good to give some information about your distro. (Ubuntu, Slackware, Suse, Debian, etc) and what version of the distro you are running (Debian Lenny, for example). Try to give as much detail as you can about your problem and in particular, what software you are using, what happened to make you think there's an error and what error messages there were (if any). The more information you give the quicker your going to get your problem solved.
ciao and have fun,
jdk

Hi,

As Meson said, please tell us which browser you are using. By "MSN" do you mean the website or the messenger? If the messenger, which application are you using? Dumb question, but have you tried rebooting your laptop? Or rebooted the netgear/modem?

If you aren't using firefox try downloading it here and see what that does for you. If you are using firefox then lets try something diferent like maybe Chrome. You can find that here. Maybe we can rule out a browser specific issue.

by "MSN" i take it that you mean the "MicroSoft Network" (MSN)
if so Microsoft disabled firefox/linux connection , on purpose!( for your improved user experience)

there is a workaround
install the firefox plugin "User Agent Switcher"
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59/
and tell it that you are running windows 7 and IE8

then you can login to msn and hot mail .

You'd be better off installing these through your distributions package manager.

Ok. My netbook is run on linux and the browser I am with already is mozilla firefox.

JDK sorry but I have no idea what a distro is. Could you please explain to me?
I am talking about MSN as in the messenger. When I try to sign in to it, a message comes up saying, our protocol is not supported by the server.
On facebook when I try to chat, it just doesn't send the message, it doesn't have a particular message that comes up telling me what is wrong though.
With my hotmail, it doesn't give me space to write and view an email, again it doesn't tell me a message of why it is doing that.

Student04, yes I turn my netbook off after I finish using it so yes it has been rebooted. Also our normal computer is run by Vista and that goes through the same netgear/modem, so I think that is all good.

John VV, I have opened the website that you gave me for the addons, however I can't seem to find where to tell it that I am running windows 7 and IE8. I also can't see what I am supposed to download. Could you please talk me through it or let me know where I am meant to go from there?

Thank you all for your help and I hope I have supplied you with a little more information so that you can help me fix the problems ASAP.

I also can't see what I am supposed to download
the "add to firefox" ! the big green link in the middle of the page .

with firefox running
-- after you installed "User Agent Switcher" and reloaded ff at least once
it is under "tools " in the ff menu
then put a check in the check box for what one you want , simple.

that is Microsoft BLOCKING software that is not OWNED BY MICROSOFT
firefox dose work but you need to fool Microsoft's server into thinking you are using win7/vista and IE8

OK I am either having a blonde moment or there is really something missing.
I am not seeing any big green link in the middle of the page.....
I am in Australia, not the US, I wonder if this makes a difference? No I guess probably not

The page says
Add-ons for firefox
User agent Switcher 0.7.2
Then just under that is a small green bar saying Download now.
Then they ask for a small donation/contribution of $1.99

sorry for being a nuisance but I can't figure this.

JDK what is the amsn package????

@gymchick
Distro = distribution - what flavour of linux are you running? examples = Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Suse, etc.
Package = This is what new software and updates to existing software are made of. I can't be more specific about how it works until you let us know what distro you're using.
If any term is unclear to you just point your browser (Firefox, Opera, Chrome...) at this link and type in the term you want to learn about. Then all will be revealed.
have fun,
jdk

What is the model number of your netbook? You state it runs linux and your main computer runs Vista but then mention Windows 7? Distro is shorted form of the word distribution. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_distribution) The linux distribution that came with Asus Eee PCs is Zandros. Some clarification here would help.

the ff plugin is free
but if you like it and want to help out the developers then a small donation is helpful
so from .au

then click on "download now" and install it .
click it , then wait the 3 sec. for it to be reconsigned by FF then click the " install" button in the pop up window

-- i do not know how much easier mozilla could have made it , the ff plugins are the easiest there is
and way way easier than on seamonky

ok now I feel like a douchebag John LOL.....I am good at many things so i suppose "IT" is not one of them OK, such is life
My netbook is indeed an Asus Eee PC Michael so obviously must be with Zandros?.
It is Mozilla Firefox yes.
Our main pc is Vista and Internet Explorer.
Thanks JDK for any further info.
John I tried to download but it just came back to the same page.
I clicked download now....then Install....then it said re start firefox (of which I did) and it's back to where I started.
So if that is indeed correct, then I beleieve the next step is tricking Microsoft's server into thinking I am using win7/vista and IE8.....how do I do that please?
