I have been using LINUX for over 15 years through work. Now I am thinking about setup LINUX on my PC to use it as an UNIX like box.

I used to launch eXceed at home to remotely connect to UNIX host at work.

I was wondering if I can use my PC like UNIX machine without connecting to remote UNIX host.

I asked mamy people at work (IT guys), nobody knows how to do it. So I found this forum. Maybe somebody knows here.

Just to clarify..you want to login to a unix box at work from a linux box at home? I believe ssh from the command line works for that...if you want something with a gui, the gnome desktop has a "connect to server" option under places, but that is more for file transfer...putty is available also I believe...command line is best if you're running commands.

I do not understand your problem as well. And because this is members intro forum, you could have chosen Linux Newbie for the question. Will report it to be moved.
As for the issue, do you want to use your Linux box at home for the purpose you connected to UNIX at work? Or you want to connect to UNIX box from your home but use Linux instead of windows? I can not make sure what you want. If you can elaborate.

Clarification
 

I have to work with UNIX based programming but off the UNIX host. Once the programming is done. I then log into the host to upload the programs and debug it in very short time to save money. So I need standalone UNIX box at home to do programming with UNIX environment.

(My company has no UNIX host at all (15+ people). But I need to log into the UNIX host of the company we contract with to work from time to time. It's a fee based service per usage ($2k/week)).

I have been using eXceed/Putty or VNC for over 20+ years. I don't have issue with that.

So my question is how to use eXceed as a standalone UNIX box (not merely a dummy terminal connected to a remote UNIX host). Or can I install LINUX on my PC to accomplish this. I tried the cygwin and I don't like it. It is just very confused with some UNIX commands and very slow.

To answer your question: no, running exceed will NOT give you
a Unix environment. exceed is just a "dumb Xwindow terminal in
software".

You could use a full Linux install, but not knowing which Unix
you're using, which development tools you're using it may or
may not help you with your coding needs.
