Hi all

What is a deamon in linux?

Sounds a bit like homework, but the quick answer is that a daemon is a Unix server process. More or less, any program that runs in the background could be considered a daemon.

So it only a Unix thing and what part does it play in Linux?

It is pretty much any OS. Just like your virus scan on windows running in the backgroup watching out for viruses as well. Daemon are in many forms for many programs. Simply a backgroud process.
