Umm.. This part makes me wonder if you didn't just boot the Live CD (if it IS a Live CD) or if you actually installed Ubuntu..

Mixed messages here.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...+ethernet+acer

Try that thread there. If that fails, or gets confusing, post again (in a new thread) and someone will try to help.

I don't have an Atheros device, and again, I don't use Ubuntu, so I can't be of much help getting it working if those instructions ail to do it. Several users on that thread claim to have had success though.

Also search here on LQ for that Atheros (or Attansic as it may be known) device to see how other users made it work.

SO - what about the small text on the black screen when trying to boot?? Any idea?

Ok, so just so people will know what it is you are trying to accomplish (the network device) after you check out that thread above and/or search here and try to get it working, start a new thread, with a title about something like "ubuntu 8.04 & Atheros 8126 blah blah whatever NIC -- How to install?" or something like that.

Cheers!
Sasha

Ok first the network card is Atheros(R) AR8121/AR8113 PCI-E

Ok these are the steps i followed to get it working!

1) I installed ubuntu hardy 64bit, i has build-essential package installed
2) Then i downloaded the linux driver from: http://support.asus.com/download/dow...model=P5KPL-CM
(as per my original post)
3) I then transfered the driver via usb stick to my laptop and unpacked the zip. (Actually i unpacked it on windows first as it has a .rar file that i could not unpack on linux Then i packed it up again on windows).
4) cd into <HOME_DIR>/LinuxDrivers/L1e_Lan/l1e-l2e-linux-v1.0.0.4/src
5) then i ran: sudo KBUILD_NOPEDANTIC=1 make
6) then i ran: sudo KBUILD_NOPEDANTIC=1 make install
7) that worked and put a driver in /lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/kernel/drivers/net/atl1e/at1le.ko
8 ) i cd into that director and i run: sudo insmod ./atl1e.ko

thats what I foind on that site.... and I dont understand a single word of it...

That's excellent and almost word for word what the other user on the Ubuntu forum had to do, as I recall!

Cool, so you now can talk to us from your new installation; congrats again!

Sasha

PS - maybe someone will pop in and explain exactly what you did there.

LMFAO!!!

maybe I copied a little too much... I didnt mean to copy the "thanks guys, I got it workning!" part...

I still didnt get it workig, if linux is going to be this much trouble I might just say screw it for a while. im working right now and im living in a camp, the internet is pretty slow so it takes me forever to load these forums and stuff, I just dont have the patience. I thought linux was going to be somewhat simple but im afraid its a bit outta my league

Im not sure what im going to do at his point...

Thanks
