Hey Folks!

Just thought I'd drop in here and give myself a welcome to the wonderful world of Linux! I think this site will have a great use for me, so without any further delaying, I have a question if I may:

I'm currently taking a Linux System Administration class, using a book called "A Practical Guide to Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux" by Mark G. Sobell, and I'm looking through this book, and unfortunately not finding the answers I'm seeking (that or I'm just overlooking some things) so I was wondering if I might get some help with some labs I'm working on. I'm running Linux through a Virtual Machine on an external Harddrive.

I've done my chkconfig to verify what the runlevels are for my processes and such, and I'm attempting to change the runlevels for my vsftpd to run levels 2 and 4.

I've tried:
vsftpd runlevel 24
vsftpd level 24
etc. etc. and when looking in the book I'm seeing runlevel changes using the following file format:
\filename\chkconfig\runlevel 24

^ The above doesn't work either. The next step after this is using the service command to start and stop vsftpd, which I can do. I just need help with the runlevel command.

Thanks in advance!
chroot/jail

edit: is there a reason no one's been able to assist me?

ok well I figured out what it was I was doing wrong, but now when I root myself it tells me it doesn't now the command so I have to su to get there, and when I type in my command (chkconfig -- levels 24 vsftpd) I get:

the basic commands prompt.

If there are no errors, it will return to the prompt
To see if the changes are made:
Code:

chkconfig --list vsftpd
See
Code:

man ckconfig
Kind regards

Thanks for that :)

The correct message I get is the Usage Screen that contains list, add, del, override, and level, so I get no confirmation that anything has changed, and when I double check, nothing has changed. I'll check the man pages though again to see if I'm doing anything else wrong.

update: when I
Code:

chkconfig --list vsftpd
I get the same message as above..

Figured it out, thanks for your help! :) I'll have to do it line by line I guess since I can only have 1 run level inquiry per chkconfig execution.

the problem was I had a space where I wasn't supposed to... I saw the error when I looked at your code example....

-.-'

Thanks again,

If you get the helppage, the command isn't correct.

try
Code:

chkconfig --levels 24 vsftpd on
Code:

chkconfig --list vsftpd
Kind regards

no, I was getting that error because instead of having
Code:

chkconfig --levels 24 vsftpd on
I had
Code:

chkconfig -- levels 24 vsftpd on
so I had to take the space out.
