in office cisco router is connected to linux server by console cable,now iam using putty i connect linux machine,in the linux machine how do i check the configuration of cisco router? help me

Cisco makes a lot of routers. If you know which one you have the manufactures webpage or manual might be helpful.

You run minicom (if you've not already installed putty), which is another serial terminal emulator. Connect the cable, and do what you need.

ok iam new to linux, i run minicom command still iam facing this error (Device /dev/ttyS0 lock failed: Operation not permitted) In my office another person access router by this command but i'cant now i connect any another cable? please tell what can i do?

Well, the first thing to do is check whether or not you have any OTHER serial devices plugged in. /dev/ttyS0 is the first serial port (COM1 equivalent in Windows). So if you've got one serial device plugged in/working (modem? Fax?), then you need to use a different port...same as with Windows.

Try /dev/ttyS1. And if your office has another person that's doing this already, you should ask them to take a look....

help pls....when i connect cisco 3800 series router with using of minicom in ubntu10.0.4 os it is not connect to router properly,in my laptop i used serial to usb convertor,in minicom serial port setup it dectect (/dev/tty/usb0) i change the other port of usb also ,but i cant access the router ,then otherone is router is new one,whenever i connect to router (pls press clt a z for special key) then other one is i can access my office router 7200 series .......pls somebody help me

Spell out your words. And the last time you posted here was back in mid-October, and we had asked you some questions, but never heard back. Again, if you have someone in your office that is already doing this, you should ask them to take a look at things. However, I don't think that's necessary in this case, as you seem to have answered your own question.

If you can talk to a Cisco 7200 router with this same configuration/setup, but not to a 3800, then the problem is very obviously with the 3800 router. You're using the same cable, same laptop, same software...but it's not working with the device on the OTHER END. That's where your problem is. So, either you've got a bad serial port on that router, or the transmit/receive pins are different on it. Try a null-modem adapter and/or read the manual on the 3800 and the 7200, which should tell you if there are any differences.

Please change your title to something relevant other than 'help'. Using informative titles is pretty much netiquette on every single forum that is in existence.

my question is at first time i install ubntu 10.0.4 os in system, after i installed ubntu then i install minicom package by using this command (sudo apt-get install minicom),to run this command i need internet or not .pls help me.....

Again, you need to SPELL OUT YOUR WORDS. It's "please", not "pls".

Also, this makes no sense, based on what you posted before. You said that you already HAD minicom working, and were able to use it to connect to another router. Now you're asking how you run it? No, you don't need internet or network connectivity to run minicom...it's a serial terminal program only. The man pages and their website can tell you everthing you need to know about it.

Another piece of advice -- make sure that the baud rate, stop bits, parity, and other connection parameters are the same for the 3800 router as they are for the 7200 router. If they're not, you might need to change the minicom configuration appropriately to establish a connection. The minicom man page and documentation will tell you exactly how to do this.

Yes, that's the command, but more importantly, you could have just RUN IT and found out the results, faster than you posted here. And AGAIN, if there's someone in your office that's done this before, why aren't you asking/talking to your co-workers?. Installing a new package on Ubuntu is well documented, and easily found with a brief Google search. If you type "how to install minicom on ubuntu" into Google, this is the VERY FIRST HIT
