Help: X11Error: Can't open display

Hello, I'm getting this message on my local linux machine when I trying to run program (AFNI). I checked "echo $DISPLAY": undefined variable. However, if I ssh to the server by Cygwin from my windows machine, I can open the display (DISPLAY = localhost:10.0)

where is the problem? how do I fix the display problem on my linux server? Thank you!

usually this error is displayed if the user account you are using has not started X before and you try to open an application that requires X. Like when you login as UserA and open shell, become a root and try to open an application that requires X, the error is displayed.

You could just try to set the $DISPLAY to point to localhost:0.0 and then try again

DISPLAY=localhost:0.0

It didn't work - can't open display

Thanks. I tried:

setenv DISPLAY localhost:0.0

then echo $DISPLAY

=localhost:0.0

But I still get the same error:

X11Error: can't open display:localhost:0.0

And everytime when I try to log out and back in, DISPLAY is undefined variable again.

Help please. Thanks.
