Help with X server

Hello all,
I am using Debian (2.6.8-2-386), It is installed on a VMware machive that a Win2k3 is hosting.
I was always working in run level 2, because I only needed the mldonkey program to run.
Now, a few days ago I tried to change to runlevel 5 but after a couple of times that the x server tried to start (GNOME), I got a message saying that after 6 times the server coudnt start, its best not to try again ...
What can I do ?
thanks alot !

try init 4
but its the same
also
give an output of /var/log/messages
or /var/log/Xorg.0.log
so we can see what's actually happening
