help with win2kserver/redhat7.3

ok.. i hope someone here can help me out. I am new to installing redhat.... anyway i'll try to explain my problem..

i have 2 ide drives 6gb each.
win2k server as master
redhat7.3 as slave(partition setup should be fine)

i install rh7.3 with grub/lilo(i've tried both).. i have even installed with booting only from floppy... i have also tried putting grub/lilo on the win2k's HD's /mbr..

now heres my problem.. after installing.. i am able to start and boot redhat with no problems.. i can reboot... grub/lilo works fine to boot from.. i can basically start up redhat no probs... BUT... once i boot to win2k svr ONCE.. something happens and i can no longer start redhat the next time i try... something in win2k seems to be altering or affecting my redhat installation.

i get something along the lines of "kernel panic error and the try passing init= option to kernel"

this has been very frustrating... if anyone knows what my problem is.. please let me know.. thanks.

you should put linux on the master and install lilo on the linux drive, it's much more straight forward and robust.

thanks for the quick reply..

that sounds like a solution and one that i would consider in the future.... but for now i would rather not move my win2k HD...

why not? you'll not affect windows in the slightest, you just set windows as the slave drive and then tell lilo to lie to windows abuot what drive it's on when you select it. you'll never need to touch the windows sdsrive, much easier than putting a boot loader on a different drive. just install linux and set up an entry for 2k by hand:

other=/dev/hdb1
label=win2k
table=/dev/hdb
map-drive=0x80
to=0x81
map-drive=0x81
to=0x80

much simpler. also then windows won't even kow that the original boot sector exists and can't change it if it is..
