Help with Vlc plugin

Hi all, i have VLC media player plugin for firefox and i would like to know how i can get firefox to recognise it. If there are any other plugins that can run windows media player videos, please let me know. Also how can i make VLC my default media player? I am runing Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron and firefox version 2.0.0.4

so how did you install the plugin ?

sudo apt-get install mozilla-plugin-vlc

then restart firefox and type about:plugins in the URL bar.. you should see the following output..
