Help with Ubuntu, after installation on a HP xp machine...
 

WEll, i'm glad to be here. I decided for Linux, because XP will die next year. I installed on a third fresh partition on my 80g harddrive, i have XP Sp3 on C:, my stuff on D: and i installed Wubi 12.04 on E:. My laptotp is a HP Easynote E 3242 with an older configuration, like processor 2G and 512RAM. But, after installation is all ok. I can boot Ubuntu, enters in menu, but the lower half of my screen is messed up, black and pink vertical lines with spaces between them,and my mouse arrow is a black figure and leaves black traces behind. I can boot Xp normaly,everything else is working ok. In Ubuntu, no reaction to keyboard, and no reaction to mouse clicks, and i received that error message befor Ubuntu loading : mount'can't read'/proc/mount's: no such file or directory " . Do i need some dedicated drivers for Ubuntu ? Or some updates ?. I will uninstall XP after Ubuntu will be ok on my laptop. New drivers for Ubuntu will conflict with thoses for XP ?. I will read the tutorial and i will try some on my own. ( Hope to not mess up things ) untill i get some response.

First of all, if you installed Ubuntu as Wubi, you have it running under XP as the host. If you remove XP, nothing will be left to work.

This method of install is intended for beginners, to try out Ubuntu. Nothing wrong with that. If you want to switch to a linux, you need to install it to its own partitions. Dual boot is what it is called.

I have never used Wubi. The problem with your screen sounds you may not have the best video driver loaded. This is not an update problem. There are drivers for Nvidia cards, Intel etc.

To find out what video card you have, you can open a command prompt, and run the command 'sudo lspci' copy and paste the lines here. Run the command without the quotes.

The command 'sudo lsmood' will list the loaded modules ( drivers). Copy and paste the list here. Then we'll be able to help.

BTW, its just support that goes away next year. XP will still run, just no more fixes for that buggy system.

You will likely have problems with that little RAM as that is the absolute minimus for Ubuntu 12.04, recommended 1GB.
