Help with Suse 7.3 and K7S5A

I'm an absolute beginner with Linux.
Can anybody help me with my installation?
I wanted to install Suse 7.3 kernel 2.4.10-4Gb on my computer:
mainboard ECS K7S5A
CPU: AMD K7 Athlon XP 2000
RAM : 512 MB DDR RAM
Graphic: nVidia GeForce 3 TI 200 64 MB
The Installation seemed to be correct. At last the computer was rebooted, then I was asked for the Monitortype. First i choose the Panasonic Panasync Pro 5G (my actual Type) and the system hanged.
After a reboot I tried the VESA 1024X768@60 Hz with the same result.
After this I rebooted the system and with the lilo there was the "failsafe" option, so I tried this.
When I was asked for the Monitortype I tried again VESA 1024X768@60 Hz. After this I choose not to configure the soundcard and the newtwork interface for the moment but to configure them later via Yast2. Now it looked as if the installation worked correct. After the next reboot there was a message that ther were troubles with the soundcard, which I ignored. The system started the KDE an I logged in as a "normal" user. Before finishing the installation (configuring the soundcard, etc.) I wanted to test the other consoles. So I switched to the 1st console and logged in as root. Then I tried to switch back to KDE. This seemed to work. But when I tried to switch back to the 1st console the screen went into textmode and then imediatly back to the graphics-mode and the system hanged. This happens everytime when I don't boot with the "failsafe"-option. Can anybody tell me what I can do?

Try

xf86config

from the command line.

I use a generic configuration for my system. Choose the number "6" monitor, your video card and go on.

If you're not satisfied with the result, but it works well (I mena: it shows less colors or a lower resolution), don't panic. Backup the /ewtc/X11/Xf86Config (or /etc/XF86Config -- I never know :-) and try other configurations with xf86config. If everything goes wrong, restore the file you backed up :-)

Try also:

yast

It used to be a console setup tool for SuSE (until 6.4, at least).

HTHT,

vfs.

I built up a system using one of these boards and linux (suse 7.3)was most unhappy with it. If I run memtest it would come up with streams of errors, caused by a bug on the board to do with impedance matching of the processor, caused all sorts of lock ups.
I gave up on the board in the end, too much hassle.

Thats my experience, hope it's of some use to you.

Geoff

Glad you got it sorted out and all working. I gave up on that board, went to a Biostar board and that was crap to put it mildly, ended up with an Asus A7A266 which runs a dream....
