help with software install
 

Alright, I'm very new to Linux, so hopefully this is a common/easily fixed issue. I'm trying to install BitchX IRC now, in the terminal while running ./configure I get an error stating

"Configure: Error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH"

So I figured I needed an acceptable C compiler... I read through a bunch of other posts on similar issues and ended up downloading gcc-3.3.3-41.i586.rpm from the SuSe FTP, however trying to install that package I get this error:

Dependancy Resolution Failed
nstalling gcc-3.3.3-41.i586[Local packages]
There are no installable providers of cpp == 3.3.3-41 for gcc-3.3.3-41.i586[Local packages]
glibc-devel-2.4-28.i686[SUSE-Linux-10.1-CD-download-x86-10.1-0-20060802-160944] needed by gcc-3.3.3-41.i586[Local packages]

and at this point im not sure where to go, am I downloading the incorrect compiler? or am i just missing something the compiler needs... any suggestions?

I am going to take a wild guess that you are running Suse 10.1 (since everyone else today seems to be trying it). The package for BitchX is on the CD's that you installed from (I think; I am not on the Suse machine at home now). In fact, so is the compiler and all the dependent packages, but you don't need the compiler to install the packages on the CD's.

You should use YAST to install stuff, not try and compile from source unless you absolutly have no other choice. Use Google to find out how to add the CD's to the Yast list of sources.

well that thought had crossed my mind, again im really new, basically my brother handed me 4 SuSe 10.1 disk and said "go at it" and I believe I have figured out how to choose the cd's as the source fro installing packages, but then when I got to check available packages to install, nothing there... I dont know if this copy of SuSe is the whole meal deal or what.

I spoke too soon, I put one of the SuSe disks back in and after playing in YaST for a bit, did end up finding a whole load of packages, I found the gcc however havent yet located xchat or bitchx, whichever its supposed to come with, thanks for the suggestion!

Ok, maybe bitchx is not there, but I was almost sure. It would be easy to check except I am sitting in a bar drinking bourbon, and the laptop is Slackware.

I just checked on my system at home (latest Suse). BitchX is already installed, but I do not see it in the Menu. I opened a terminal and typed "bitchx" and it opened and connected. This is a total install, with everything, so bitchx is on the CD's, and might even already be installed. KSirC, Konversation and KVLrc3 are also installed, and I bet at least one of those is just a front end for BitchX.
