help with sendmail


Please help me diagnose (linux Fedora 16) sendmail. see below for messages. Why is there a period after the word "localdomain". Can someone please advise me.


[eva@localhost ~]$ su -
Password:
[root@localhost ~]# mail -v abc123@gmail.com
Subject: testa
This is a test
EOT
abc123@gmail.com... Connecting to localhost.localdomain. port 587 via relay...
abc123@gmail.com... Deferred: Connection refused by localhost.localdomain.

First, is this period causing any problem? Actually it's a system generated message.
As far as I understood, localhost.localdomain. is part of your system's FQDN. A period always comes after one-level down in domain name hierarchy. It should be something like localhost.localdomain.<organization>.com. or localhost.localdomain.com.
Can you once share what's your systems top-level domain name or FQDN? Also mention the issue that you're facing.

Hello Meninvenus,
Out of exasperation, I reinstall my o/s (fedora 16). Now I'm getting this error as seen below:

Oct 24 09:21:30 eva sendmail[11944]: q9OEKoSK011942: to=<brow24@gmail.com>, delay=00:00:40, xdelay=00:00:40, mailer=esmtp, pri=150530, relay=gmail.com., dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: Name server: gmail.com.: host name lookup failure

Here is a dump of my host file
[root@eva ~]# cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4
::1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost6 localhost6.localdomain6

Hello Meninvenus,

To answer your question on FQDN, here are the outputs:

[root@eva ~]# dnsdomainname
localdomain
---
[root@eva ~]$ hostname
eva.localdomain
