help with sendmail
Please help me diagnose (linux Fedora 16) sendmail. see below for messages. Why is there a period after the word "localdomain". Can someone please advise me.
[eva@localhost ~]$ su -
[root@localhost ~]# mail -v email@example.com
This is a test
firstname.lastname@example.org... Connecting to localhost.localdomain. port 587 via relay...
email@example.com... Deferred: Connection refused by localhost.localdomain.
As far as I understood, localhost.localdomain. is part of your system's FQDN. A period always comes after one-level down in domain name hierarchy. It should be something like localhost.localdomain.<organization>.com. or localhost.localdomain.com.
Can you once share what's your systems top-level domain name or FQDN? Also mention the issue that you're facing.
Out of exasperation, I reinstall my o/s (fedora 16). Now I'm getting this error as seen below:
Oct 24 09:21:30 eva sendmail: q9OEKoSK011942: to=<firstname.lastname@example.org>, delay=00:00:40, xdelay=00:00:40, mailer=esmtp, pri=150530, relay=gmail.com., dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: Name server: gmail.com.: host name lookup failure
Oct 24 09:21:30 eva sendmail: q9OEKoSK011942: to=<email@example.com>, delay=00:00:40, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=esmtp, pri=150530, relay=yahoo.com., dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: Name server: yahoo.com.: host name lookup failure
Here is a dump of my host file
[root@eva ~]# cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4
::1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost6 localhost6.localdomain6
To answer your question on FQDN, here are the outputs:
[root@eva ~]# dnsdomainname
[root@eva ~]$ hostname
I hope information provided here helps.
Thanks and best regards,
