I just installed Fedora 12 on a rack computer. I know my screen has the ability to show 1600x1200 pixels. But I don't know what my video card can do. Right now my screen is stuck at 800x600. When I had Fedora 11 I remember it could go to 1024x768 or maybe a little larger.

I can't really find a driver for the ATI RageXL and I was hoping someone can help me find one, and also suggest other options to make the screen resolution as high as possible.

Please ask for more information specifically if needed.

You can try to use xrandr to review your video card capabilities, or maybe use a GUI based client named grandr, xrandr will run in any desktop.

Using Fedora 12 fresh install, the xrandr command says that the highest resolution is 800x600. However, a fresh install of Fedora 11 displays 1024x768 at startup. So I know that it can at least do that. In both installations, the display configuration utility says that the monitor is unknown.

I found this: ATI's website (http://ati.amd.com/developer/altoschart.pdf) that says that the ATI Rage XL card is supported by Xfree86 or X.org.

What is Xfree86? If I use Xfree86, do I still have a Gnome desktop environment? I guess I want to know if it's a drastic change or is it something that runs in the background.

Xfree86 is the old X window manager, the new one (many years ago) is Xorg. You should use Xorg. Gnome runs in both. What video card do you have ? I may be able to help you with the drivers installation.

Type lspci and post the output. I installed an ATI driver many years ago.
