Question Help with running 'Wine' on Red Hat Linux 9

I had a virus on my PC which ran Windows XP, couldn't find recovery disc and didn't have a Windows disc since it was pre-installed when I bought it, so only alternative was to install Linux.

I'm quite new to Red Hat 9, but I'm impressed with some of it's features and the fact that the risk of getting viruses is lower (if I'm correct). My question is, I still want to run some Windows applications and have heard of a program called 'Wine'. Went to their website downloaded the correct RPM but it's missing a certain other RPM which is glibc-2.3.2-27.9.7.i686.rpm

Downloaded the above RPM and tried to install it but half-way through it just goes off. Anyone know why?, and if so, what is causing the error?

Does anyone have a step by step way to get Wine to work?, do I need to install windows or does Wine run windows software without any need to have Windows on the PC? (if that makes sense)

Thanks in advance for your help.

not sure but try to install gcc and glibc-devel (package which should be on your cds)

Otherwise many sites like rpm.pbone have rpm packages. Is one of this working?
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat....i686.rpm.html

If you download it and do rpm -iv glibc-2.3.2-27.9.7.i686.rpm
the verbose mode might tell you what is wrong

I'm not sure if it's in RH9, but there's a package manager called Yum that I'm pretty sure resolbe dependencies when you try to install using that. Even if it is in what you have you might think about upgrading. Redhat 9 is a bit old and I don't think it's really supported anymore. The new versions of Red hat are just commercial, but Fedora is basically the same for personal use.

Thanks for the help. It stops half way through installation with no explanation. I was thinking of installing Fedora Core 4, would you recommend it?, also does that include Wine or a similar program so I could use Windows applications?.

Also, what other Linux distributions are available free and which do you recommend?

Is that the version of glibc it is asking for?

You might have to go with an older version of glibc to match the older version of RH...

Fedoras almost up to version 5 now...12345...RH9 was just before those IIRC...

Also, look for a log file related to RPM..it may show what the hang is...where is that /var/lib/?

Well, if you can upgrade your distro, go ahead this will be much simpler.
FC4 is ok (but you may want to research their installer, I am not sure it is always very practical from what I heard).
Otherwise see bignames like Mandriva and Suse (and many others), or look on distrowatch.

Wine is moving on very quickly so no distro will be up to date. See winehq to download the latest version.
If you are into gaming consider cedega / transgaming.

There are many alternatives to Zinblows software, so you might not need wine as much as that
