If it's a Debian type thing: using .deb packages. Then do:
apt-get install make
at a terminal prompt. You may have to install other stuff, gcc perhaps; then it's apt-get install make gcc etc. etc.
Could also use dselect or aptitude.
If it's a Red Hat style thing: using .rpm packages. Then do:
rpm install make
or something like that.
