Help with install

:newbie: Linux Mandrake 8.2

please help!

I have downloaded the .iso files from the ftp server and have extracted them and written them to CD-R. I also made a boot floppy. I put them in my computer and it didn't recognise the CD as being a Linux Mandrake 8.2 and wanted me to try again and again.

I think that I need to put a specific file name and the title to recognise it. am I right? The computer I use to access internet and write CDs is win XP. I use the Win XP software to write CDs

I am really looking forward to using linux i was using win ME but wanted a change.

Please help!!!

most likely did not burn properly. when burning, make sure you specify its a iso image so it burns correctly.

:newbie:

I did. I used WinImage to extract the iso and i then copied the files the the CD folder and pushed "write to cd".

Is there a special name for the cd to be called. I called it CD1.

Thanks

usually when burning a iso image, it will auto create the name of the cd.. usually that shouldn't matter though with the name..
never extracted first then copied to cd, that might be the problem, might want to just tell whatever program your using that it is a iso image and it should correctly burn the cd for ya.

:newbie:

thanks

I have installed Mandrake but when I logon I get a dual boot menu saying

Linux
Linux2
failsafe
windows
windows2
floppy

I click on linux and all I get is the (excuse the windows words) "DOS" interface.

How do you access KDE and Gnome??
