Help with first install
 

I am a veteran of PC's for almost 12 years now and I finally made the switch from the other guy to Mandrakes Mandriva Linux LE 2005 which is 10.2. I downloaded the 3 ISO's from linuxISO.org and burnt them yesterday. Last night I started the install, it wasnt a GUI interface like their website showed. It was like the original shell instalation in the begining of a windows install. It finished loaded all the packs and from what I gather was a very clean streight forward install. when the computer rebooted it went through all it checks only failing one, had something to do with cpuiq whatever that is. Then the login command prompt, i logged in but its a command shell. Did I install the wrong verson of linux? Why no GUI interface? am I not doing something right? My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 2600, 1.2 GHz, 512mb of ram, 40gig HD and whatever else came with this thing. I installed linux on my spare 40gig Hitachi and I have XP pro on my 80 gig. Im in the Army deployed to Kuwait so I have to use XP pro on the network for internet access but I want to be able to swap my drives back and forth from Bill Gates $h%t to my new found glory. Anyone that can help I please ask for your assistance

Hi and welcome to LQ :D Type in startx once you have logged in and let us know what happens. Assuming that works, the next step is to set your system to always boot into graphical mode (Xwindows) if that is what you want.

I would expect the you got the console based installation because Linux didn't recognise your graphics card, you may need to install some drivers before being able to use a gui. What graphics card to you use?

When you have started X, use you favurite editor and edit /etc/inittab

Change:
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6 !)
id:3:initdefault:

To:
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6 !)
id:4:initdefault:

Then X starts automaticly at boot.

Its a factory Intel part of my Dell, Intel 830m chipset, I downloaded the linux driver for it but i dont know how to install it.

should i open the iso with winRAR and put the intel driver on the boot disc?

Run whole the "xorgconfig" program, and when you are asked wheter you want to take a loot at the videocard-database, you say yes, and choose opion 15. It might work.

Yes run the xorgconfig program first, you may be able to use one of the default drivers, I forgot about that.

If none of the drivers work then there must be a link to an install guide or some documentation on the page where you downloaded the driver from, that will give you details on how to install the driver.

Only do what Jorek says in post 5 once you have X configured correctly

ok intels site says to save it to a directory, then type rpm drivername.rpm

so how do i access other media ie cd or floppy or usb drive?
