Help with enabling Java plugin on Firefox

Hi

I removed iceweasel and installed firefox.

I installed the latest Java SDK, and set it as default, output of java -version as follows:

java version "1.8.0_25"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_25-b17)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.25-b02, mixed mode)

But I cannot get the plugin working on FF!

I have followed various guides which as far as I can see boils down to creating a symlink to the ~/.mozilla/plugins directory. I have done this. I even made sure I did it as both root and user. Restarted FF, even the OS (been tackling this a while) and still Java website reports no java plugin?

Java is installed to /opt/jdk

Thanks

seeing as most distros are using icedtea and NOT Oracle's java
/usr/lib64/IcedTeaPlugin.so

the two are not compatible but can be installed side by side
use "alternatives" to set it or links

Normally Firefox and Iceweasel use the same configuration folder (~/.mozilla). Are you using the same profile for both? I have the same setup (Oracle jre and jdk in /opt for use only when necessary). My java version is this:
Code:
~$ java -version
java version "1.7.0_65"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea 2.5.2) (7u65-2.5.2-4)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.65-b04, mixed mode)

I went to the Oracle website and then to Java in the Products section. Everything seemed to work normally. Can you tell me where you got the information about the java plugin on the "Java website"?
jdk
