Help with compiling MPlayer

Hi, im compiling my first program (mplayer) and im stuck, i found a step by step guide but i still need you guys!!!! anyways ill give you the outline, the guide said i needed these files.
1.the mplayer source code
2.the build scripts
3.skins
4.fonts
5.win32 codecs
6.divx4
7.libdvdcss
8.libdvdread

so i got them all and it says put all archives in same directory with build scripts so i did, i put them all in root/home in a folder named MPlayer, so then it says open a shell and cd to that area and then type ". /libdvdcss.build --cleanup" but when i type that i get the error "tar: Warning the -y option is not supported: perhaps you meant -j?" I dont know what flag this is or how to type, according to the guide this command is supposed to remove the source tree and the temporary package directory, so i can use the "installpkg libdvdcss.tgz command, if i type that command know it says its not a tgz file
can anybody help

see my guide in my sig below, there are clear instructions on how to get it installed.

mostly for red hat, but I have gotten it to work on other distros too.
