So your CD-R device is not dev=1,1,0, try using something like;

cdrecord dev=/dev/cdrom -data perplexity.txt

Or find out which device number to use with cdrecord; cdrecord -scanbus

Code:
$ cdrecord -scanbus

So.. are you using scsi emulation ? If yes, your cd-burner won't be /dev/hdd , but /dev/sr0 or /dev/scd0.
If not (may be you loaded a 2.6 kernel) you must use the ATAPI tranport layer. In the latter try to determine what cdrecord assigns to your Cd-burner by
cdercord dev=ATAPI -scanbus.
you should get an output like

elio@darkstar:~$ cdrecord dev=ATAPI -scanbus
Cdrecord-Clone 2.01 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2004 Jörg Schilling
cdrecord: Warning: Running on Linux-2.6.20.1
cdrecord: There are unsettled issues with Linux-2.5 and newer.
cdrecord: If you have unexpected problems, please try Linux-2.4 or Solaris.
scsidev: 'ATAPI'
devname: 'ATAPI'
scsibus: -2 target: -2 lun: -2
Warning: Using ATA Packet interface.
Warning: The related Linux kernel interface code seems to be unmaintained.
Warning: There is absolutely NO DMA, operations thus are slow.
Using libscg version 'schily-0.8'.
scsibus0:
0,0,0 0) 'HL-DT-ST' 'DVD-ROM GDR8163B' '0L23' Removable CD-ROM
0,1,0 1) 'HL-DT-ST' 'DVDRAM GSA-4165B' 'DL03' Removable CD-ROM
0,2,0 2) *
0,3,0 3) *
0,4,0 4) *
0,5,0 5) *
0,6,0 6) *
0,7,0 7) *

so, as my dvd-burner is HL-DT-ST' 'DVDRAM GSA-4165B' 'DL03' Removable CD-ROM I'd do
cdrecord -v dev=ATAPI:0,1,0 -data /path/to/my/file
Hope this helps
Ciao

cmd finished after 3.851s timeout 480s
cdrecord: Cannot fixate disk.

cdrecord: fifo had 1 puts and 0 gets.
cdrecord: fifo was 0 times empty and 0 times full, min fill was 100%.

Because of the bugs/fixes/improvements in the older firmware versions. Revision : 'NYK1' has been replaced a number of times, the current version is NYK5 as per the link.

The file being burned using the cdrecord command must be a iso9660 filesystem. You can create a iso9660 filesystem using the mkisofs utility.

BTW k3b is an excellent GUI CD writing application.
