help with booting/grub error 17


searched around and from what ive read im hosed but maybe someone can point me in a better direction.....
situation:dual boot system winxp and debian on hda 20 gig,xp on first 4 gig,debian 14.5 gig,swap 512 meg

hdb 60 gig was all ntfs, wanted read write in linux so I used partition magic to resize this drive not touching hda HOWEVER after all was done and reboot
GRUB ERROR 17

I understand sort of that this error means unrecognized file system?? but I didnt do anything to hda just hdb how can i fix???dont have boot disk although I do have knoppix...I verified that all my data is still there

Use the debian CD in rescue mode. Start grub at the command prompt. It might have to think about the bios for a bit then it will give you a grub prompt. then try

root (hd0,1)
setup (hd0)
quit

This is assuming that the debian /boot is on hda2, and you want grub reinstalled on the mbr.

As you said it shouldn't really of affected grub at all.

I just have the sarge install disk it does not have a rescue option

You should also be able to do this from knoppix. ( Sarge isn't released yet so the CD's don't have the complete options. ).
