Help with a webcam please, "Logitech, Inc,"

Hi everyone,
I have almost managed to do this all by my lonesome, I'm fairly new to Linux, but I have picked up some of the basic understanding. I have been using Windows for many years, in fact, I still do (Studying purposes).

I have a "Logitech QuickCam Messenger Communicate" and I have installed the qc-usb drivers for it. It took me a fair amount of time to get to the point where my system would actually recognise the camera itself, it is fairly old but still does its job.

What confuses me, is that once I had installed it, the "activity light" on the cam is constantly on which leads me to believe that it is being used.

When I am on certain programs such as "skype", it is shown in the device list, but when I try to view or test the camera input, Iam displayed with various errors such as "/dev/video0" does not exist.

I was wondering if it possible to check for errors or, may I have missed something "linux-like"? I have tried many forums and googling, but they all seem to lead to dead ends, mass patching, corrupt or old files etc and I have gotten the stage where my head is spinning.

Some useful information might be from my dmesg:
Code:

[ 3543.162995] qcmessenger: QuickCam USB camera found (driver version QuickCam Messenger/Communicate USB 1.8 $Date: 2008/05/26 00:00:00 $)
