Help! Weird X error after installation!

Okay I got everything installed this time and did a boot in text mode option. I started X using the startx command...and everything seemed to be good, then as I am clicking a few things on the desktop the screen goes black and I'm unable to do anything.
Please help, I've posted before on _this_ forum. Hopefully this isn't reposting...What can I look at?

Maybe the wrong graphic driver is in use.

Can you press 'Ctrl-Alt-Backspace' and have it restart X?

Can you press 'Ctrl-Alt-F1' or replace F1 with F2, F3 etc and see a console?

Okay, I restarted X again to try your suggestion, and instead of a black screen it just froze up after i clicked on an icon. The mouse still works but keyboard etc was froze. I'm thinking its the vid card also...though, i thought it might be a bad hard drive, that possible? If it's the vid card how can i check the errors and/or correct the settings in text?
