Help want to get free from microsoft - help with duel boot xp pro & suse?
 

Hello

I am a really new to linux OS, and i really have had enough with microsoft products.

I have a laptop with xp pro, and the hard disk is ntfs file system with a single partition. I would like to duel boot it with suse 9.0, to get a chance to slowly get learn this OS. Can anyone help me? Really appriciated.

First, you will need to get space on your harddisk! Partition magic can resize NTFS partitions and I have heard that Yast2 (the setup-tool of SuSE) does that too (but I have never tried).

Once you have free space on your harddisk, yast will recognize it and provide a partition-proposal (mostly with 2 new partitions, one large for the OS, the other as swap partition). Just check that yast does not want to use the whole disk for Linux, if you do not want to get rid of windows.

Yast should then automatically create a dual-boot system, using grub as bootloader. The windows partition will be mounted read-only if it is NTFS.

PQ (PowerQuest Partition Magic v8) is good for resize nfts filesystem.
Concerning dual boot grub knows who create dual boot. Linux + XP. Nothing to do at this stage.

and save yourself some headache (your next question once you get suse installed is "why can't I read or write to my XP partition?") and ALSO convert the filesystem from NTFS to FAT32.... NTFS is [for all intents and purposes] read only at this time. the latest partition magic supports this filesystem conversion...
