Question Help w/ downloads & Installation

First off, I am an experienced Windows/dos user from way back. I am also a fantastically unexperienced linux newbie, so please bear with me. I have been trying to d/load themes from the net using Mandrake 8.0 as my dist. and Mozilla 0.9.1 as my browser. When I download something, I make note of where in the directory it is targeted to. The download completes, Mozilla tells me the download is complete, but when I go looking for it in a terminal (rxvt), it is no where to be found. I understand it is in .tar.gz format, but I cannot find it. Further, when I re-download the same file, I get no -file already exists- warning (normal???). Please help, it would really bite if for some reason this was a read-only system (note: I in rxvt as a SuperUser).

Also, anybody know of something comperable to windows explorer, something that let me get a graphical view of the file structure, and alow for manipulation of those files.

Thanks for any help....Bison.

Well, first off what command are you trying to use when looking for the file you just downloaded?
If you cd into the directory you downloaded it to, do a ls -al and see if you see it then.
If you have X working, it should come with a file manager to view the files like you would in Windows. What distro and desktop (KDE or GNOME etc...) are you using?

Still can't find it

First, thanks for the help/reply....

I was using the command ls but couldn't see it....I tried using ls -al and still no luck. I am using GNOME and (or?) Icewm as my GUI. Actually, I just tried updating the installation and did find a non-standard-istall package called FileRunner which is supposed to give a Windows-Explorer-type GUI for file management, but it cannot find the file either. Also, if this means anything, the same thing is happening no matter what file I download, be it a game, theme, plugin, whatever. Is it at all possible that for some reason I've gone and made my box read-only?

Is there any way to check my file permission levels?

Also, on an unrelated topic, is there any way to clean up my LILO? Everytime I do an update-to-install by using the install CD's, my LILO lists all kinds of OLDLINUX options to boot to....am I eating up disk space, or is this just a function of LILO which is saving old settings?

Again, thanks for the help, as a newbie, I really appreciate it....Rob.

It sounds like your version of linux a backup of your existing kernel everytime you update-to-install. This is a safety precaution so that you can boot into an old kernel/version if it doesn't work with the new one.
The kernels are small (less 1MB) but you can "clean-up" lilo. Doing it manually would mean to edit the /etc/lilo.conf file, remove any section containing "old" kernels, then run /sbin/lilo to update your boot information. Also read the man-page for lilo.conf, man lilo.conf.
If this works then you can delete the kernel images not used, you find them in the /boot directory.
Be careful not to delete the one(s) you use!
